There is growing evidence that oxidative stress and inflammation are associated with higher risks of heart disease (1). And oxidation of low-density lipoproteins (LDL, bad cholesterol) has been linked to an increase in the formation of plaques in blood vessels (2).

Astaxanthin has been shown to reduce oxidation of LDL (3) and reduce LDL and oxidative stress in a human trial of overweight individuals (4).

Animal studies have also shown that astaxanthin may support a delayed progression in high-risk stroke cases (5). Clinical tests have also shown that astaxanthin reduces C-reactive protein, which is a biomarker for inflammation associated with a greater risk of developing heart disease (6).

These studies suggest a positive correlation between astaxanthin and improved heart health.
